Here we go...

The love of my life has Alzheimer's. We've only been married a year and a half. Diagnoses are difficult to come by. He was only just diagnosed, even though I have known it for the past year, which means he had it when I married him. Would I do it again? Most of the time. Not always. This disease is the Amtrak train that was supposed to be the light at the end of the tunnel. We were supposed to retire into wedded bliss and remain ageless forever. It is still early, so some days are joyful. Those who know say many joyful days remain.

He will be 66 years old in July. I've spent the past year waiting on a diagnosis and trying to figure out what this means to me. I think it means I got my wish.

Ever since I was old enough to think, I have wanted to know more about God. I was born seeking Jesus, but you’d never have known it to look at me. Finally, at age 17, He found me, and the trips around the mountain began. My trails have been crooked indeed; yet here I am, faced with being an Alzheimer's Caregiver, remembering that I was born seeking Jesus.

A lot of people go to church and find peace there. I didn’t. So Holy Spirit followed me wherever I went, training me for what was to come. What was to come to my husband, and therefore to me, was Alzheimer’s. If ever there was an abyss deeper than my son’s suicide, this would be it. And yet, gifts reside within both. It is my intention to explore and to share them here.
